Natural - Nanimarquina

"Natural is what doesn’t need any great effort to comprehend". Nanimarquina has designed a new rug collection that invite us to feel what nature offer us. After 25 years designing and producing stunning carpets, Nani Marquina looks back on her career, choosing the best of her expertise. She became recently a grandmother, and that's why she looks back to her life and all that happened, what she learnt and the preferences in life after this years of travelling, gathering experiences, knowledge and the wisdom of others. Nanimarquina thinking has been that true innovation lies precisely in creating rugs using what our environment gives us, like the plant that grows around us. We together go back to the roots of the handmade carpets materials and techniques. The Natural Collection has been produced with an exclusive selection of natural fibres that reflect the plurality that nature has to offer: nettle, afghan wool, silk and jute. These fibres are twisted together into continuous thread: a highly laborious manual process that enriches the design, giving each carpet a soft and unique texture. About Nanimarquina: Since its outset in Barcelona in 1987, nanimarquina has designed carpets and textile items, putting special emphasis on research into raw materials and manufacturing processes. This enhances the beauty of the products, converting carpets, textures, colours, knots… into art; into stories. Nani Marquina began by creating and producing her own designs and, gradually, decided to incorporate the collections of renowned international designers into her catalogue. The first joint ventures were with well-known Spanish designers such as Mariscal, Peret, Samsó, and her father, Rafael Marquina. In 1993, Nani Marquina embarked on her biggest adventure: to relocate her production to northern India, where she discovered the local manual manufacturing systems and broadened her knowledge about the culture and the symbolism of carpets. This incorporation of traditional carpet-making techniques into new production methods became a distinguishing feature and has made the brand internationally renowned: each carpet is unique in its design and quality. This fact has persuaded designers, architects and artists from Barcelona and from the rest of the world, such as Martí Guixé, Gerard Moliné, Cristian Zuzunaga, Emiliana Studio, Tord Boontje, Ron Arad, Michael Lin, Sybilla and, more recently, Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec, to design a unique rug for nanimarquina. www.nanimarquina.com https://www.dropbox.com/sh/g7gu103w62mr954/SOa7LCjeak felices@communicology.es
The memories of a wooden desk

The memories of a wooden desk

When we choose to work on a desk made of wood, we know that it has ‘memory’. In a fast-changing world, we look for things that afford stability. An environment of hand-worked wood is capable of transmitting feelings; amongst them the sensation of the passing of time, heritage, permanence, stability and companionship. On this occasion, Muebles Picó is presenting an example of classic carpentry from Valencia, the principal birthplace of industrial furniture in Spain. In its private museum we discover some identifiable traits of the company’s DNA, such as colorful marquetry work. In answer to what defines them, Muebles Picó has stated their work lies in the hands of master craftsmen; those who carry out the cutting, the marquetry and finishing of their pieces. One defining characteristic of classical furniture making is how the final form accentuates the raw material and how the organic, often irregular qualities of walnut wood are incorporated into the final piece. The sheets that contain these grains and burls are hand selected and combined one by one. Muebles Picó was founded nearly 70 years ago and continues to be a family business. The company’s trajectory stands out for the innovative way it has remained stylistically classical in settings - such as kitchens - that demand advanced technology. It has carried out hundreds of residential and public projects across the globe in which wood plays a fundamental role in the overall status of the environment. Territories where the company has worked include Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the United States and Russia. Axalko: new generation of bicycle 'luthiers'

Six years ago the Tellería brothers (Aitzol and Andoitz), both professionals in the wood industry and fans of bicycle culture and mountain sport, joined up with fellow professional Enrique Ardura. Together, they were inspired to develop a project that combined their knowledge of wood modification technology and all its potential. Working from their joinery called Txirbil (meaning ‘wood shaving’ in Euskera, the ancient language of the Basque lands), the design team came to the conclusion that the tubular fibers of wood were perfect for creating a fast, sturdy bicycle frame. As well as having an interesting natural aesthetic, wood is resistant, can absorb a high level of vibration and can result much lighter than generally perceived. Axalko is the name given to these new wooden bicycles, inspired by a character from the brothers’ childhood – a quick and ingenious fox who appeared in fables their grandmother told them. An in-depth study was called for, looking at the effect the various forces would have on the bike frame in motion. Its micro-laminated finish allows for the utmost levels of resistance and rigidity. On the other hand, its hollow structure makes it really lightweight. The core of the frame is made with ash tree wood, a species indigenous to the region and that can also be found all over Europe, including the Britain and Ireland. The bike has been favorably tested by members of professional teams as well as in two demanding races in France - the París-Roubaix and the Flandes Tour. Like if it were a luthier atelier, most of the Axalko bike’s manufacturing process is done by hand, meaning care is taken over every detail, whether technical or aesthetic. Clients can have their model customized by choosing the colors and laminated finish. Durable, practical and elegant, the Axalko bike sets the bar high for stylish commuting. When asked about their innovative technique, Axalko’s creators simply answer that they have bridled a technology already found in nature. http://axalko.com/ www.confemadera.es http://vimeo.com/channels/woodmasters felices@communicology.es
